The Air Force Center of Excellence for Knowledge Management here was recently named one of five best-practice partners for outstanding practices in knowledge management by the American Productivity and Quality Center, a nonprofit organization and leader in benchmarking, knowledge management, measurement, and quality programs.

"To be named by APQC as a best-practice partner is quite an honor," said Randy Adkins, the center's director. "Sharing what you know is a core tenant of knowledge management, and APQC provides an outstanding opportunity for us to learn and share with our industry peers."

The center was the only government agency recognized by APQC.

APQC and its study sponsors visited Wright-Patterson in November 2005 for a site tour and examination of the center's best practices. The study finished January with the center's participation in a knowledge transfer session held in Houston, Texas. Mr. Adkins and four other center members attended the session and presented materials on the Air Force's overall approach to knowledge management.

"Knowledge management is not just about technology; it's an entire set of processes designed to deliver ever-increasing value to the Air Force," Mr. Adkins said.

"Connecting people to people in order to share knowledge is our number one focus. Our ultimate goal is to enable the warfighter to make better and faster decisions, and sharing best practices among our partners helps us to achieve that goal."

Other organizations selected as a best-practice partner by APQC included Buckman Labs, Caterpillar, Raytheon, and Tata Steel.
