Air Force announces new AFMC executive director

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio --  Air Force officials announced March 3, 2016, the assignment of Patricia M. Young as the executive director of Air Force Materiel Command. She is currently the Director, Washington Headquarters Services, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. The command's current executive director, Michael Gill, will retire effective April 1 after 34 years of service.

Young and Gill are both members of the Senior Executive Service.

As executive director, Young will advise the AFMC commander in managing all aspects of the command's mission, serve as the services contracts advocate and oversee the command's small business program. As the command's senior civilian, she will also advise the commander on labor union relations and development of the civilian work force. Civilians make up more than 70 percent of the command -- the highest percentage among all Air Force major commands -- and AFMC employs 40 percent of the total Air Force civilians.

Prior to Young's appointment as director of Washington Headquarters Services in March 2015, she was the assistant deputy chief of staff for logistics, installations and mission support at Headquarters U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C.

Young was previously assigned to U.S. Transportation Command, where she served as deputy director of logistics and business operations, as deputy director for strategies and policy, and as deputy to the commander at the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command. She entered the Senior Executive Service in 2002.

Gill's previous assignments include serving as the director of the TRICARE Regional Office South, as the director of contracting at AFMC, as the executive director of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center and as the executive director of the Odgen Air Logistics Complex (formerly Ogden Air Logistics Center) at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. Gill entered the Senior Executive Service in 2001.
