Being Fit 4 Life physically, nutritionally, mentally and spiritually has not only become a familiar motto around Tinker Air Force Base, but it is also garnering attention from a national organization which promotes healthier lifestyles.

The American Council for Fitness and Nutrition recognized the outstanding accomplishments and efforts encompassed by Tinker Air Force Base's Fit 4 Life program at the Trends, Resources and Inspiration for Understanding and Maintaining Physical Health event Nov. 16 in Oklahoma City.

"We are helping people to see the importance of physical fitness and its impact on increasing their productivity and the significance of their overall health and wellness," said Karen Blackwell, Chief of Health Promotions.

The Fit 4 Life program began with the vision to change the culture of the Air Force to encompass total fitness, working as a team and getting strong support from base leadership.

Some of the steps that have been taken to support the programs include providing well-trained physical training leaders and a variety of sources of information and inspiration for working to achieve their own fitness goals.

"Fit 4 Life encourages civilians on Tinker to get involved in some type of physical activity," Ms. Blackwell said. "Our mission is to support the warfighter and we can do that better by improving our health."

Five other programs from across the state were also recognized for their contributions to helping Oklahomans become healthier. They are the Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition, REACH: Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health, Together at the Table, the Kids Memorial Marathon and Turning Point Council's Walk This Weigh.

During the event, Oklahoma Secretary of Health Terry Cline urged everyone across the state, regardless of age or ability, to take charge of their own wellness.

"Programs like the ones represented here today, throughout our city and state, will help you take the first step in your journey to a healthier lifestyle," he said.

The ACFN is a non-profit organization that brings together food and beverage companies, associations and health and nutrition advocates to work toward viable long-term solutions to the nation's obesity epidemic.

The council seeks to highlight the individuals and organizations that are empowering people to make positive choices and sustainable changes to live a more balanced, healthy lifestyle.
