DAF to increase transparency, accountability in sexual misconduct cases

The Department of the Air Force began publishing the nature and results of sexual misconduct disciplinary actions on installation websites across the Air Force and Space Force on Dec. 1, 2023.

This change supports a Department of Defense effort to promote greater transparency and accountability in sexual misconduct cases and is in accordance with recommendations from the Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military.

The IRC was established to provide the DOD with guidance across four lines of effort: accountability, prevention, climate and culture, and victim care and support.

Commanders at the installation level will be responsible for publishing case summaries every 60 days, which are intended to inform the base populace of the consequences of committing sexual misconduct. The information will be released without identifying the accused, victim, or unit. This new process is captured in the Department of the Air Force Instructions and will not impact the judicial process.

In addition to publishing the nature and result of sexual misconduct disciplinary actions on installation websites, the DAF is taking other steps to address sexual misconduct in the military. These include:

• Increasing training for all Airmen and Guardians on sexual assault prevention and response.
• Improving the way sexual assault is investigated and prosecuted.
• Providing more support for victims of sexual assault.
• Creating a more inclusive and respectful culture in the DAF.

The DAF is committed to eradicating sexual misconduct from the military. For more information on Department of the Air Force efforts, visit www.resilience.af.mil/SAPR. For information on DOD efforts, visit www.sapr.mil.
