April brings sexual assault awareness to forefront

Nearly one in five women and one in 71 men in the U.S. have been raped at some point in their life, According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center,

Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month in April has the goal of raising awareness about sexual assault and violence, educating the community on prevention methods to end sexual violence and assault, and to educate the community on reporting options that are available.

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office at Tinker Air Force Base has a goal of preventing and responding to sexual assault through education, advocacy and justice in order to promote respect and dignity throughout the Air Force.

According to statistics provided by the SAPR office, 6.2% of female and 0.7% of male active duty members reported being sexually assaulted in 2018.

Throughout the month of April, SAPR aims to highlight the resources provided on and the Tinker community through various virtual activities and events, including sharing statistics about sexual assault, a “believe victims” pledge day, the presentation of the documentary “Nameless“ hosted by Men Can Stop Rape, Denim Day and Wear Your Teal Day.

April 23- Consent Quiz Do you understand what consent is and its importance? Take the quiz at nsvrc.org/saam.

April 28- “Wear Your Teal Day” Teal is the color that represents sexual assault awareness and prevention. SAPR is encouraging the Tinker community to wear a teal ribbon, shirt or accessory every Tuesday in April to show support.

April 28- “Nameless” Documentary This documentary about child sex trafficking is being presented by the organization Men Can Stop Rape and can be watched by registering at MCSR.org/saam-digital.

April 29- Denim Day For 21 years, Peace Over Violence has run an inspiring and powerful opportunity to practice solidarity and support for survivors by renewing the commitment to expose harmful behaviors and attitudes surrounding sexual violence. Denim Day takes place on the last Wednesday in April and asks community members to wear denim to protest misconceptions surrounding sexual violence.
