HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Officials from the 66th Civil Engineering Division announced that the base’s annual National Arbor Day activities have been postponed.
Traditionally observed April 26, this year’s tree-planting event will take place in September.
“The ceremony allows us a chance to discuss the importance of trees and caring for them with Hanscom Middle School students,” said Michael Watkin, 66 CED community planner, and organizer of Arbor Day events.
This is Hanscom’s 33rd consecutive year recognized as a Tree City USA.
To qualify for this distinction, a community must have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation in conjunction with the events in September.
“The program is the framework for a healthy, sustainable urban forestry program,” he said.
