KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center’s Executive Director was recently promoted within the Senior Executive Service.
Joseph Oder was promoted to the second tier of the SES grade structure after his position increased in scope and responsibilities with continuous growth in the center’s portfolios for nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles, air-delivered weapons, and command-and-control communications.
“This is an awesome milestone and I could not be more grateful to Mr. Oder and his tireless efforts on behalf of the center,” said Brig. Gen. Anthony Genatempo, AFNWC commander.
Oder advises the AFNWC commander in managing all aspects of the center’s mission to modernize and maintain an effective land- and air-based nuclear deterrent that safeguards the United States, assures allies and deters adversaries. He also establishes and maintains working relationships with Air Force major commands, Department of Defense and its military services, Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, and other key mission stakeholders.
A U.S. Air Force Academy graduate, Oder has over 25 years of experience in nuclear weapons and counter proliferation. He has served as both an officer and a civilian in the Air Force and National Nuclear Security Administration.
The Senior Executive Service was established by Title IV of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978 and its members are charged with leading the government and “producing results for the American people,” according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. These leaders operate and oversee nearly every government activity in about 75 federal agencies. The service covers managerial, supervisory and policy positions classified above the civil service grade of GS-15.
