BACN team tapped for Gen. Mark A. Welsh III award

The Battlefield Airborne Communications Node Team at Hanscom Air Force Base was recently selected as a candidate for the Gen. Mark A. Welsh III ‘One Air Force’ Award.

The award is an Air Force-level honor recognizing the team that best demonstrates improved effectiveness, operational readiness or mission accomplishment through integrated solutions.

“This nomination reinforces our commitment to leveraging the unique strengths of each component to achieve our mission,” said Tonya MacEwen, BACN program manager.

The team distinguished itself in 2025 for delivering the final two E-11A aircraft, completing the fleet and bolstering critical battlefield communications capabilities by 33%. Through satellite technology integration, the team revolutionized total force communications, supporting 400 aircraft and 12,000 personnel.

“This nomination is a reflection of the phenomenal team I have the privilege of leading,” said Lt. Col. Mark Oleksak, BACN materiel leader. “My role is to empower these talented professionals and foster an environment that enables them to support the warfighter. This honor highlights a core belief in our branch that is our strength lies in our ability to integrate diverse talents and perspectives to solve complex problems.”

The team also collaborated to field a new $5 million U.S. Central Command operating location in a record seven days that promotes regional security and deters threats. 

“This showcases our leadership philosophy that focuses on enabling rapid, integrated solutions, which is the heart of the ‘One Air Force’ concept,” said Oleksak.

The nomination reinforces the team’s resolve to improve operational readiness and continue delivering innovative and effective solutions for the warfighter.

“Being nominated for an award that epitomizes the ‘One Air Force’ spirit is a powerful motivator,” MacEwen said. “We are inspired to build on this success and continue to find new ways to embody the principles of a truly integrated total force.”
