The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center activated its tenth and final detachment, Detachment 6, during a ceremony here May 26, 2015.

Detachment 6 will directly support Air Force Materiel Command, which is also AFIMSC's parent major command.

Maj. Gen. Theresa Carter, AFIMSC commander, presided over the activation ceremony as Col. Jeffrey Todd assumed command of the new detachment. Todd will serve as the interim commander until Col. Shawn Moore, currently the 96th Civil Engineer Group commander at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, arrives later in the summer.

"This is a new approach for the Air Force, and in some ways it's like buying a new car," Carter said. "You don't expect a lot of things to go wrong with a brand new car, but sometimes there are hazards that you can't predict. Roadside assistance gives you advice and counsel and sends a relief team when you need it. That's what I would argue our detachments are doing. Our detachments respond to the warning lights on the dashboard, making sure our Center knows what support our commanders and installations need."

AFIMSC performs major command-level installation and mission support activities, and serves as the single intermediate-level headquarters, providing installation and expeditionary support for 77 major installations, 10 MAJCOMs and two direct reporting units. Centralized management of installation support capabilities ensures each installation receives the necessary level of support to execute Air Force priorities.

The center is the parent organization for several existing field operating agencies including the Air Force Security Forces Center, Air Force Civil Engineer Center, Air Force Installation Contracting Agency and the Air Force Services Activity, as well as other FOAs providing installation capabilities.

"The members of Detachment 6 are consummate professionals," Todd said. "We aren't focused on organizational change. We're focused on what's important, and that's working with AFMC and the Center to ensure our commanders continue to get the support they need."

The AFIMSC headquarters was activated in a ceremony May 5 at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. Three hundred and fifty people will be assigned to the headquarters and up to 43 people will be assigned to Detachment 6.

Detachment 6 is the last in a series of detachment activations within AFIMSC. The first was in April in support of Pacific Air Forces at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. A total of 10 detachments have now been activated globally.
