U.S. Air Force celebrates 67 years of airpower

  • Published
On Sept. 12, 2014, Air Force leadership sent a Letter to Airmen to commemorate the 67th birthday of the United States Air Force:

"To the Airmen of the United States Air Force:

On September 18, 1947, the 80th United States Congress created what is today the world's largest, most capable and most technologically advanced air, space and cyberspace force. As we mark the 67th year of the United States Air Force, we salute all Airmen, past and present.

Technology advances and our missions evolve, but the resolve and professionalism of American Airmen remain constant and the very heart of our legacy. We owe an enormous debt to the ground-breaking visionaries and engineering pioneers who brought the technology of flight to life -- captains of airpower like Mitchell, Arnold, Spaatz, Doolittle and LeMay. These Air Force leaders, and many others like them, leaned forward during periods of uncertainty and gave us some of our greatest Air Force moments -- points in time when innovation, courage and determination set us on new paths to success.

Today, we are once again at an Air Force moment. We must continue to leverage the Air Force's culture of professionalism, innovation and agility to meet the rapidly evolving threats of the future. Our technology makes us a formidable foe, but the most advanced technology in the world only gets us so far. We are the world's greatest Air Force because of people like you, Airmen who have answered our Nation's call to Fly, Fight and Win.

Happy 67th birthday, Air Force!

Secretary of the Air Force

Gen. Mark A. Welsh III
