Warthogs get Lean
HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah — Front to rear: Mat Langston, 28, and J. C. Wilde, 23, both electricians with the 309th Aircraft Maintenance Group at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, “clean and close” an A-10 being used to improve sustainment and modification procedures for the aircraft through Lean principles. Once completed, the insight gained will help 571st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crews improve quality and efficiency while completing Service Life Extension and Precision Engagement work. According to Rick Merrill, Hill’s A-10 Production Chief, the unit will extend the service life of some 36 other “Warthogs” this year, while another 72 will be worked for precision engagement --- adding smart weapons capabilities to the aircraft.
