AFMC commander focuses on recycling
WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio -- Clad in a shirt made of 50 percent recycled milk jugs, Bill Meinerding shows off a block of crushed aluminum cans to Gen. Donald Hoffman, Air Force Materiel Command commander. Mr. Meinerding and Cathy Hillard from the 88th ABW Qualified Recycling Program set up shop Thursday in the AFMC headquarters building to talk about the methods and benefits of recycling. The display included pencils made of old denim and worn-out paper currency; miniature trash cans to encourage reducing waste; and smoothed ground-up glass that can be used for mulch and garden walkways. With resources conservation as one of his top priorities, General Hoffman made it a point to visit the booth and learn more about recycling efforts on base. For example, Mr. Meinerding told General Hoffman it takes about 600 crushed cans to form a 20 pound block of aluminum, similar to the one pictured. The blocks are then sold to companies and are typically used to make more cans. (Air Force photo by Ron Fry)
