8: Ladies Black Mess Dress

Women in the Air Force version of the black mess dress uniform: There were black and white mess dress uniforms for wear in the winter or summer months. The black mess dress was worn in the winter with a black jacket, pants and wheel hat (for males); enlisted members wore silver bullion chevrons on this uniform. The white mess dress was worn in the summer months with a white jacket, black pants and white wheel hat. Enlisted members initially wore white embroidered chevrons with a white background, soon giving way to a silver bullion/aluminum chevron with a black background. These uniforms were issued as early as the 1950s and were not phased out until the 1980s.
