AFWERX innovation transitions from fighter cockpits to NASA spaceflight

An Advanced Inflight Relief Universal System (AIRUS) is shown aboard the International Space Station following its arrival on SpaceX Crew-12, launched Feb. 13, 2026. Originally developed through the AFWERX Sky High Relief Challenge to improve quality of life for military aviators, the Airion AIRUS system transitioned from supporting Airmen to serving as a technology demonstration for NASA astronauts. The demonstration highlights how AFWERX, a division within the Air Force Research Laboratory's Technology Transition Office, accelerates innovative solutions from operational military needs to broader applications that support human spaceflight.
