  • Airmen find solution to KC-135, C-130 battery testing failure

    Airmen from Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base, Ohio, and Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, helped revise outdated procedures for testing the condition of aircraft batteries on the KC-135 Stratotanker and C-130 Hercules, preventing the premature disposal and replacement of batteries and avoiding unnecessary equipment costs and maintenance hours.
  • Online emission inspection system saves money, air quality

    More than 60 Air Force installations are reaping savings and the benefits of improved air quality, thanks to the continued use of an online vehicle air emission inspection and compliance system that is estimated to be saving the Air Force over $11.8 million annually. The Air Force Civil Engineer Center launched the Employee-vehicle Certification and Reporting System, or ECARS, in 2013, and has since rolled the software out. ECARS tracks employee compliance with local requirements to ensure employees remain compliant, regardless of which state their vehicles are registered in.
  • Optimize aviation fuel? The Air Force wants your ideas

    In partnership with AFWERX, Air Force Operational Energy has launched an Airmen Powered by Innovation Challenge to solicit ideas on how to optimize aviation fuel for the Air Force, enabling greater combat capability, range, and more efficient operations. The challenge is open to Airmen of all ranks and occupations and is accepting submissions on a rolling basis.
  • Rapidly deployed digital tool advances energy in wargaming effort

    In a shortened timeline of 12 weeks, engineers from OSD's Cost Assessment and Evaluation Program (CAPE) augmented the modeling and simulation tool SWIFT (Standard Wargame Integration Facilitation Toolkit) to play the first joint wargame focused solely on energy and fuel logistics, the Joint Forces Energy Wargame (JFEW). The tool enabled deeper analysis and after-action reporting, which helped to identify critical energy challenges for the Air Force and Joint Operations.
  • Energy project powers Hill AFB energy efficiency, resiliency

    The Air Force completed construction of a $42 million project recently that will improve energy efficiency and resiliency at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. AFCEC, in collaboration with the Defense Logistics Agency – Energy (DLA-E), awarded the contract to Energy Systems Group, the energy service company, in April 2018, for upgrades to 258 buildings, totaling six million square feet by incorporating seven energy conservation measure upgrades. The addition of the 3.55-megawatt solar array to an existing 250 kilowatt fixed ground mount system increases the annual energy savings by 5.7 million kilowatt hours.
